Letter #7

To your eyes this Saturday,

It’s already the last weekend of June! This has been one heck of a month! May this find you…you know the deal 😉.

Before getting into my letter monologue, I’m going to get “bubbly” for a bit.

For my treasured writers, readers, and commenters…

Without you, I don’t think I would’ve kept up with poetry blogging. Whatever reason you write for, whether it’s therapeutically, for entertainment, or sharing personal/intimate things, I want you to know that I cherish those bits of you and keep them close—okay, I hoard them in my Favorite’s List (sue me).

I have tried different ways to express this feeling in these letters. And to me, it’s never enough. What I’m trying to say is I’m nothing without you.

I’m not the writer I’ve dreamt of being.

I’m not the Reader that I am without the Writer in you.

Most of all, I’m not the friend/supporter I ever saw myself  after years of pushing people away who tried to get close to me.

I know that “Thank You’s” are repetitive and can dull over time.

So how about this, I tidied up a place in my heart especially for you. It’s where you belong and it’s where I’ll keep you (you’re all mine *Evil laugh 😈), even when we’re not writing.

Okay, enough of being bubbly.

I was debating whether I should do a Personal Audio Entry but I think these letters greatly make up for it—now that I’ve mentioned it, I need to get back into recording some audio poems (who knows, I’ll even try a Saturday poem too).

Between balancing work and writing, I was planning on keeping the three to four post upload schedule for the weekends. It gives me time to do my “adult” stuff and keep up with reading everyone’s posts. I don’t think it’s bad—I hope it’s not bad 😅.

I know that June has been emotionally and creatively draining for some—understandable. Yours truly wants to help break that cycle.

Jar of Poetry has done what most blogs have or are doing already:

  • Wrote/Shared/Reblogged

  • Followed/Commented

  • Recorded audio poetry (I’ve been lazy but I did do a few)

  • Organized a Poetry Contest

  • Handed out Poetry Prompts

  • Highlighted/Showcased Writers and their work

What did this site not accomplish yet?!

I still haven’t done any Collaborations yet—weird, right?! To be honest, I’ve never done a Collaborative Poem. After doing some research and reading at how boring the roles are (the one time I read it all the way through 🙄🤣), I’d like to give it a try—and also make it less boring in the process.

Here’s what I propose.

It would be an honor to work with you to write a poem. It can be a “response” type or “a few lines” to make a whole one—just remember, I suck at literary etiquette. I will do my best to accommodate and incorporate my style to blend with yours. It doesn’t matter to me if you’re new or have been poetry blogging for a while. I think it would be really cool to try something new with another writer.

This is strictly for entertainment and performance but most of all, it’s to accomplish something I haven’t done on this site.

By doing this, here’s what you’re in for:

  • You will decide on the genre, topic, message, and/or style and

  • Whether it’ll be posted on Saturday or Sunday (EST)

I’ll be upfront and tell you I can’t pay you like I did the Poetry Contest.

With that said, I’m still trying to work out how to go about doing this. The only two solutions I came to were:

1) by email or
2) by sending the interested writer(s) a special invite and authorizing a Role for them on JOP so we can work ‘incognito’ before it goes up.

I know that it’s easier to just write it and go from there. But I want to be able to pick their brain and ask, “why that particular style?” or “what’s the overall message that we’re trying to bring out?”—me just being a poetry nerd.

*Very Important Note:

There are very few people I trust on WordPress and only a pinch-full I wouldn’t hesitate giving this opportunity to. The “Special Invite” isn’t open for just anyone.

Once the Collab poem is finished and after it goes up, I would love to add a complimentary post about the experience working with that person. It will range from writing what it was like working with this person; it could be an interview-style type post; or a Top Five List of questions for them to answer.

I’m still trying to work out the specifics but I would really love to do a Collab Month for July. If you’re interested, let me know in the Comments or send me an email (jarofpoetry@gmail.com).

To help close this letter off, here’s is the audio recording of my ukulele playing skills. It’s short but I think you’ll enjoy it!

From my heart to yours,

  1. John! What a special letter you sent out into the world. You are amazing. And the music that you played at the end was soothing on this day of the week called Sunday. Thank you for sharing. I will ponder on a possible collaboration. I wrote six chapbooks with another poet, but the only part that was truly a collaboration was theme.
    Peace out to you always~~~;🌸)

    1. It’s always a pleasure V ☺ (is it okay to call you that?) I’m patient and I also understand that not a lot of people like this sort of thing–it’s cool that you have six chapbooks under your belt!

  2. Everything about this post is gorgeous and soul warming. You strike me as a person who just ‘connects’ with people and makes everyone you interact with feel important and valued.

And your ukelele bought a huge smile to my face. Beautiful.

  3. John…. wow. Just so wonderful. And how is it that I’m always in a mess by Saturday. 😭✍️😂 And then you’re perking us all up again. 😽😸 A collab sounds amazing. I’ve never done one like that either, always wondered how it works. Very cool that you organize ideas around it. I don’t understand the roles thing, is that from some help literature on WP somewhere, or is it something else? Anyway, looking forward to seeing things develop. What a wonderful idea. And the ukulele playing is so clear and beautiful. Maybe it should rather be a song. :))💡😉🔆😊🎶

    1. 😅😁 I thought I’d throw the idea out there and see where it goes.

The Roles for WP allows writers to have “specific perks” to another person’s site. It’s how a blog can have multiple writers under one site name. Personally, I think it’s like a “sneak peek” at what is going to be posted.

And the compliment for the ukulele playing goes a long way, thank you ☺. One of my favorite songs by Elvis…stereotypical, but always worth playing on it.

      1. Well I’m glad you did. 👌👏 Ahhhh, ok. That makes sense about the roles. I love the recording, also very inspiring, to practice to get it just right like that. 🙏 Cheers and kudos. 🍵✨🍵

  4. Oh hey John, as always L.O.V.E, love your letters. I genuinely laugh out loud a lot. Lia is gonna flip her lid at the recording at the end too 😉😂
Poetry collabs… Very cool idea. I shall watch this space, but I’m hoping that (whoever you write with) you produce something steamy that will make us all hot and bothered AND a seriously political commentary on current global events. I feel they compliment each other 😜
Also, I’ve worked out your release your letters 11pm Sat my time, so you just manage to sneak them into Saturday 😁
Looking forward to reading your next scheduled pieces. ✌️

    1. 😐 Oh my God! 😆😂🤣
Thank you so much Secret 😊

Yeah…idk if I can pull this off yet (let alone write something steamy).

Well, hopefully the coming month will be fun. Get some rest☺
